Steven Hyde's (Danny Masterson) parents didn't have a prominent presence on That '70s Show but their absence had lasting effects. Hyde was one of the core young characters at the center of the Fox sitcom, which ran from 1998 to 2006. The character's mother, Edna Hyde, was played by seasoned actress, Katey Sagal, whereas his legal father, Bud, was portrayed by Robert Hays. Here's what happened to Edna and Bud, including how their actions transformed Hyde's life.

From the beginning of That '70s Show, it was revealed that Hyde didn't have the best home life. He was sarcastic and a bit of troublemaker, but served as one of Eric Forman's (Topher Grace) best friends. Eric's parents, Red and Kitty (Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp), were aware of Hyde's behavior but they blamed it on the effects of his deadbeat parents, Edna and Bud. The two were deadbeats and never took parenting seriously, forcing Red and Kitty to later step in to eventually give Hyde a chance at a normal life.

Edna was first introduced in the season 1 episode, "Career Day." As part of a school assignment, Hyde accompanied his mother to work for the day. She was the school's cafeteria server referred to as "Gross Edna," a nickname that didn't seem to bother her. His chain-smoking mom was heard in a few episodes later that season but she never made any other on-screen appearances. Edna ended up running off so Hyde moved in with the Forman. That was until Hyde's alcoholic father, Bud, reentered the picture in season 3. Sadly, Bud ended up letting down Hyde a second time, and both of the teen's parents disappeared for good.

Both Of Hyde's Parents Disappeared After Season 3

After Hyde put the effort into rebuilding a relationship with his father, Bud abandoned him yet again following That '70s Show season 3. It was revealed that Bud reunited with Edna and the two got back together. Rather than serve as real parents, the two stayed away from Point Place and didn't reveal their whereabouts to Hyde. This proved that the two were never capable of raising a child, but thankfully, Hyde found suitable replacements. As for Sagal and Hays' availability, the former moved on to Futurama and 8 Simple Rules while the latter continued working on TV and film projects.

Hyde eventually moved in with the Formans permanently when Red and Kitty became his foster parents. They treated him like one of their own and gave him everything he never had, including love and respect. Hyde was eternally grateful for the Formans, but he later found out that his real father was out there and willing to build a relationship. It turned out that Bud wasn't his biological father; that title went to William Barnett (Tim Reid), a wealthy black man who owned a chain of record stores. Hyde ended up managing one of the record stores alongside his half-sister, Angie, but that didn't end his time with the Formans. William's entrance into Hyde's life may have been meaningful considering his bad luck with Edna and Bud, but it was Red and Kitty who truly prepared him for adulthood, as seen throughout That '70s Show 's later seasons.
